History of Mangu
Mangu Local Government Area lies in the central part of Plateau State, Nigeria, with its administrative headquarters in the town of Mangu. It covers an area of approximately 1,653 km² and had a recorded population of around 294,931 (2006 Census).
The area is known for its fertile agricultural land and significant maize production indeed, the famed “Mangu Maize Market” attracts buyers from across Nigeria and is a major trading hub for the crop.Mangu is home to the indigenous Mwaghavul people and several other ethnic groups, each contributing to the cultural richness of the LGA.
Over recent years, the LGA has also faced significant security and communal challenges government interventions such as curfews and fact-finding missions have been put in place in response. Today, Mangu stands at the threshold of transformation balancing its agricultural heritage, cultural identity and community resilience in pursuit of inclusive development.Mangu Local Government Area sits in the heart of Plateau State, Nigeria, with its administrative headquarters in the town of Mangu. Historically an agricultural and commercial hub, Mangu is renowned for its fertile land and the bustling Mangu maize market an important centre for trade across the region. Leadership / Chairman’s Profile
Executive Chairman, Mangu LGA
Hon. Emmanuel Bala Mwolpun leads the Council with a focus on service delivery, infrastructure improvement, agricultural support and youth empowerment. The administration prioritizes transparency, community engagement and projects that deliver measurable benefits to citizens across all wards.
Administrative Structure
Mangu LGA is organised to ensure local representation and service delivery through an Executive arm (the Chairman and appointed officers) and a Legislative arm (councillors representing wards). Departments include Education, Health, Works & Infrastructure, Agriculture, Finance, and Social Services — each headed by a director responsible for planning and implementation.
